China may ban holders of US diplomatic passports from visiting Xinjiang province
This move by Beijing is a response to a bill that is being considered in Washington.
Chief Editor «Huanqiu shibao» (Global Times) Hu Xijin said on Tuesday that China may prohibit all persons holding US diplomatic passports from entering the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR).
Hu Xijin said on Twitter that China is also considering imposing visa restrictions on US officials and lawmakers who «stand odiously» on Xinjiang. This move by Beijing is a response to a bill that is being considered in the US Congress. Xijin did not say where he got the information from.
At least 1 million Uyghurs and other ethnic groups, mostly Muslims, are being held in camps in a remote region of Xinjiang, according to American experts and human rights activists. Senior US officials, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, have publicly criticized China for the situation there..
China denies the abuse in the camps, which Beijing says provide training to people in them to help eliminate religious extremism and teach them new skills. Beijing has repeatedly demanded that the United States and other states that criticize its policies in Xinjiang stop interfering in China’s internal affairs..
